The Ugly Thread about Marlon Sander’s Video Shows You How to Create Buzz

I originally posted this yesterday at:

Paul Myers, a respected internet marketer, with whom I have had the pleasure of interviewing for a newspaper article, started the thread about Marlon Sander’s new video

The thread is called Hysterical Video.

Here is what Paul wrote:

‘Marlon Sanders does “JayWalking.” This is really fun.’

link to the video

Paul continues…

“Nice bit. Works on all kinds of levels. Anyone know a camera that’ll give those kinds of video results?”

Then it got ugly.

People bashing each other. People flaming the gurus. People defending themselves. Some people laughing.

I just had get my two cents in..

While reading through the posts I saw a thought provoking well written post by Dr. Hakim Chishti of the Advanced Marketing Insitute. Basically, Dr.Chishti’s said hire  profressionals to make your marketing videos.  I urge you to read the thread so you can read Dr Chishti’s words as he mean’t them to be read.

You will also see a case study in realtime about generating buzz for a product launch.

So, here is my post….

First thoughts on the video.

Kinda of Geeky. Kinda of Dumb

Since I own some of Marlons’s products and actively promote one of them, I think I will use something, “You gotta see this dumb little video by marketing geeks trying to look cool.”

More Important Thoughts.

If you want to make a professional looking teaser then read on…

Producing quality video is not hard or expensive. Right now, it cost less than a $1000.00 per minute of professionally finished video. Hakim’s two million dollar price for a professional TV commercial is based partly on using 35 mm film.

I directed and a 9 minute long video for less than $600.00. This video showed in Edmonton’s Citadel Theatre Complex So when I say you don’t need a lot of people or equipment, you can believe me.

All you need, at the most, are four lights, a 3ccd camera that has auxiliary audio inputs, I use a Canon GL2, wireless or boom mics, editing software, I used iMovie, it comes installed on Macs. However, you can get free software at http://www.avid.com/freedv/resources.asp

You will also want to get sandbags to keep your lights from falling over, a generator, food for your cast and crew, and maybe a jib for some awesome effects.

You can rent all this stuff.

You can learn how to do taking part in workshop offered by your local film and video co-op. You should be able to get discounted rentals on all the equipment you need.

Fava is the co-op in Edmonton. They have links to other co-ops across Canada.

The most important part of the co-ops is that you can find everybody and everything you need at these co-ops.

Yours, in the spirit of Riel,

Jerry Reeder
